| Temperament Tests
Temperament testing helps shelters to find out more about a dog's personality: how well he is socialized, how easy he is to handle, how he reacts to different situations, etc. Reputable shelters will use well-established temperament tests and offer to show you the results. Popular tests are Sue Sternberg's "Assess-A-Pet" and the ASPCA's "SAFER test". Some organizations may tell you they conduct "modified" versions of these, and that's okay too.
